The Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) issued its annual award for Outstanding Achievement in Instructional Design to the IDriveSafely Novice Driver Training Program learning object design, developed by Kathleen Keller, principle of the American Courseware Company.
The winning instructional design model features learning “objects” that can stand alone or be integrated into one or more training curricula. Unique to the field of instructional technology, the design incorporates knowledge and attitude learning theories and methods in a media-rich online learning experience. The instructional model successfully engages visual and auditory learners by reinforcing every learning objective with an interactive game or activity, featuring immediate feedback.
In addition to the unique combination of learning methods, the design was also selected for its flexibility for use in various curriculum settings. The learning objects can stand alone as individual topics, be used together to as an entire online driver education course (integrated with in-car instruction), or be used to supplement existing driver training curricula.
Annually, the AECT design and development committee reviews hundreds of submissions in the selection process for outstanding practice in instructional design. Kathleen Keller and the IDS instructional model were recognized for this achievement at the 2005 awards luncheon during the AECT International Convention, October 20, 2005 in Orlando, Florida.
